1. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that the websites visited by a user send to and store on their computer or mobile device, to be retransmitted to the same websites upon subsequent visits.
Thanks to cookies, the website remembers the user’s actions and preferences (such as login data, chosen language, font size, display settings, etc.), so they don’t have to be re-entered each time the user returns to the site or navigates from one page to another.

Cookies are therefore used to perform IT authentications, session tracking, and storage of information regarding user activities while accessing a site. They may also contain a unique identification code that allows tracking of the user’s browsing within the site for statistical or advertising purposes.

While browsing a site, users may also receive cookies on their devices from websites or web servers other than the one they are visiting (so-called “third-party cookies”).

2. What are the main types of cookies?

There are various types of cookies, depending on their characteristics and functions. These can remain on the user’s computer or mobile device for different periods of time:

  • Session cookies, which are automatically deleted when the browser is closed.
  • Persistent cookies, which remain on the user’s device until their pre-set expiration date.

According to Italian law, user consent is not always required for the use of cookies. In particular, “technical cookies”—those used solely to carry out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network or to the extent strictly necessary to provide a service explicitly requested by the user—do not require consent.
In other words, these are cookies that are essential for the website to function properly or necessary to perform activities requested by the user.

Also treated as “technical cookies” (and therefore not requiring express consent) are:

  • “Analytics cookies”, when used directly by the website operator (“first-party cookies”) to collect information, in aggregate form, about the number of users and how they visit the site—or, when provided by third parties, if suitable measures are taken to reduce their ability to identify users (for example, by masking significant portions of the IP address);
  • “Functionality cookies”, which allow the user to browse based on a set of selected criteria (for example, language, selected products) in order to improve the service provided.

Conversely, “profiling cookies”—those aimed at creating user profiles and used to send advertising messages aligned with the preferences expressed by the user during online browsing—require the user’s prior consent.

3. Categorie dei cookies

However, access to public content remains possible even if all cookies are disabled.
Disabling “third-party cookies” does not affect website navigation in any way.

Cookie settings can be configured specifically for each website and web application.
